Why MacGyver?

For the new school crowd, who may not be familiar with ancient 1980’s pop culture, MacGyver was a television show that aired from 1985 to 1992. The lead character, secret agent Angus MacGyver, was famous for his perfectly coiffed mullet, an unassuming charm that drove the ladies wild, and an uncanny ability to get himself out of any jam by using quick thinking and repurposed objects that happened to be around. Armed with infallible scientific knowledge, a Swiss army knife, and duct tape he always managed to prevail against evil, maintain perfect hair, and get the girl!

In fact this guy was so cool that today his name has become a verb and can be found in the Oxford Dictionaries; “MacGyver is to make or repair something in an improvised or inventive way, making use of whatever items are at hand”. If you have ever used a pencil eraser to fill in as an earring back then you totally MacGyvered it. Although this acid washed denim character from the 80’s seems a bit corny by today’s standards the fundamental talents he possessed are timeless and remain in great demand.

When employers are asked what they look for when scouting prospective employees ever more frequently, even before mentioning high pedigree and advanced degrees, they list qualities such as the ability take initiative, communicate effectively, brainstorm with teams, be socially and ethically responsible, understand diverse cultures, work under pressure, problem solve, think outside the box, be flexible, improvise, and be literate in the constantly evolving technologies that have become an indispensable part of our reality.

Consequently, these attributes have become known as 21st century skills and in the modern workforce one’s capacity to master them is essential if he or she wishes to excel. These 21st century tools that secret agent MacGyver wielded so eloquently in 1985 are exactly what we wish to encourage in our program’s participants; however, they will be on their own regarding their hairstyles and dating lives…Sorry kids.
